The Saronic & Peloponnese
An easy sail from Athens, the Saronic islands of Hydra, Aegina and Poros pair with the Peloponnese coast and the old capital of Nafplio: mountains, myths and harbours at a human scale.
Move south from Athens and the landscape changes register: the land grows more mountainous, and looking out over the mass of Mount Taygetos it is easy to see why mountains carried so much weight in the ancient myths. This is the corner of Greece where a morning swim off an island and an evening in a stone-built old town belong to the same day.
Islands at arm’s reach
Hydra, Aegina and Poros sit within a short sail of the capital, each with its own temperament: Hydra with no cars at all, Aegina with its pistachios and temple, Poros wrapped around its channel. None of them ask for a long crossing, which makes the Saronic the most effortless island chapter in Greece.
The Peloponnese shore
Along the Peloponnesian coast, beautiful villages and pristine beaches string together toward Nafplio, the old first capital, all balconies and bougainvillea below its fortress. Many guests combine the Saronic with the Sporades on a longer odyssey under sail; done in either order, it is a journey of very short distances and very long evenings.
