Mainland Greece runs from Thessaloniki in the north through Delphi and Athens toward the Peloponnese: mountain landscapes, ancient sanctuaries and a capital where the ruins and the nightlife share the same street.
Many travellers dream of the islands; others know that a wealth of beautiful landscapes and deep history waits on the mainland. The term covers a tremendous amount of ground, from Thessaloniki in the north down through Delphi and Athens, and on to the Peloponnese in the south.
Who the mainland is for
A mainland itinerary suits travellers who prefer solid ground to a deck, and anyone drawn to mountainscapes, long dusty roads and the bustle of a great capital. It also pairs naturally with the islands: a Meteora detour has never once been regretted by our guests, and Athens rewards every layover it is given.
The capital’s trick
Athens is alive with modern culture and ancient history knitted together arguably more tightly than anywhere else on earth. Dinner in a modern restaurant, and beyond the glass the 2,500-year-old temple of an Olympian god, lit for the evening: that is the power and the uniqueness of the city. From there, the road runs north to the oracle at Delphi, the monasteries of Meteora and the food-proud second city of Thessaloniki.
